“I never learned about Black history in school until I was in college. Growing up, I was taught each year about the dazzling accomplishments of a predominantly white male America. Even now as a middle aged man, I realize there is a lot I still don’t know about all the wonderfully important contributions Black men and women made that greatly and positively impacted this country. I think if there had been a more inclusive perspective of American history, I would have been fully engaged with the subject.
Over the last four years, it became more important to me to figure out a way to use my 24 years of fashion design experience and my ingenuity with bag concepts to create a product that has the potential to be very profitable and combines style with education. Over 56 million kids carrying backpacks attend elementary and secondary schools in the United States. The backpacks target the increasing buying power of minorities, a $3.9 trillion opportunity. The African American market has seen a 114% increase in buying power since 2000. Black buying power was $1.4 trillion in 2019, and is projected to grow to $1.8 trillion by 2024. My mission is to have a product that is affordable, stylish, educational, engaging, and innovative, that also gives back to worthwhile non-profit organizations.
We don't just owe it to ourselves to lift up the names of Black changemakers and culture contributors lest we forget, but we also owe it to our children to inform and educate them on the legacy from which they are born. Representation Matters. LET'S AMPLIFY BLACK EXCELLENCE!”
